Two suspected gang members were charged Monday evening in the slaying of 15-year-old majorette Hadiya Pendleton on January 29, 2013, she who performed at the Obama inauguration. The news hit just days before Obama is due in Chicago to deliver a speech that focuses more attention on the everyday violence that has shamed his home city over the past year as Chicago became the nation’s murder capital for 2012 and is on track this year to record another heavy homicide toll.

Benjamin "Benji" Wilson Jr.Wilson was an American high school basketball player from Chicago. He was murdered on November 21, 1984, one day before the start of his senior basketball season after conflict with two students from a nearby school. Wilson was the first Chicago basketball player to be named the top high school basketball player in the country.
Chicago's Most Violent Weekend of 2013On June 14, 15, and 16 in Chicago, at least 41 people were shot, seven of them fatally. The youngest victim was a 16 years old. 28 of the shootings, including six of the fatal ones, took place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Another 13 people, one fatally, were shot between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The Chicago Tribune reports a trail of blood remained in a Northwest Side alley and on the bumper of a car, left behind from 16-year-old Kevin Rivera as he unsuccessfully attempted to outrun a gunman on a bicycle.

Demetrius Southland, 21, was visiting the area and walking a dog when he was shot in the 14800-block of Kimbark, police said. Police found him unresponsive on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. |
